Another World

Hello, I’ve started a new book and I will be updating regularly. It’s a fantasy romance story where a modern thirty-year-old woman gets transported into another world!

Description:

Jennifer Medina is a data analyst for Newton Solutions. Every day, she goes to work, keeps to herself as she gets things done, and then goes home to immerse herself in reading one of her hundreds of books.

One day, after a brief encounter with a new employee, Rick, Jennifer ends up getting hit by a truck while saving a child who ran into the street and was put into a coma. When she finally wakes up, she finds out she’s not in her own body, but rather in the cursed body of Scarlett, the love rival in the book she was reading ‘The Three Princes’.

Now, Jennifer has to traverse this new world, pretending to be Scarlett while dealing with all the drama brought to her by the three princes and Scarlett’s family.

Will Jennifer be found out? How will she deal with the princes’ interest in her? What is the secret behind Scarlett’s curse? Who is it that shows up to help her? Will she be able to make it back to her own body? And who is the one who finally sways her closed heart?

Story Preview: Chapter 1

It’s almost time to head home. Jennifer thought as she adjusted her glasses and looked at the time in the bottom corner of her computer screen. The moment the time hit four o’clock, she signed out of her computer, grabbed her purse, and headed out of the office.

One of the new people at the accounting firm watched her head out. “Is she always like that?” Rick asked the person in the cubical next to him, having noticed the same behaviour since he got there a couple of days ago.

“Who are you talking about?” Bill asked, peeking over the cubical walls to look around.

“Jennifer; the woman with short brown hair and glasses.”

“Oh, you mean the data analyst? Yeah, she’s always the first out the door; been that way since she started working here years ago.”

“I wonder why she’s always in a hurry… Is she single?” He didn’t see a ring on her finger, so he assumed she at least wasn’t married.

“Beats me. We’ve worked together for years, but I couldn’t tell you much about her. I know she keeps to herself and has a little plush tiger keychain on her bag. Clashes a bit with how she seems, but I think it’s cute.” Bill thought for a moment, trying to think of any useful information about her. “She only comes to the required office events and leaves as soon as she can during those too.”

“Doesn’t talk to anyone.”

He shrugged. “Not more than necessary.”

“That’s a shame…” he mumbled to himself.

“What was that?”

“Nothing.” His eyes lingered on the elevator door as he sighed.

Jennifer walked down the street to a nearby apartment building. Using the stairs, she got to her shoebox apartment on the second floor. She kicked her low-heels off, tossed her blazer aside, and went into the kitchen to make tea. She set her tea on the coffee table and plopped down on her cushy chair – one of only a few pieces of furniture she splurged on because she knew she’d use it frequently – surrounded by bookcases stuffed full of books and opened the current book she was reading off of the end table beside her, The Three Princes.

I wonder which one Irene will end up with. It’s mostly between the two princes Alan and Blaine, right? Since Cedric doesn’t seem to have any interest in her or anyone for that matter.

Completely forgetting about the time, Jennifer fell asleep in the chair while reading.

The next day, Jennifer rushed to toast some frozen waffles after oversleeping in her chair and not having dinner.

Pop. She got changed and grabbed the waffles.

“Hot, hot, hot,” she dropped them on the counter, blowing on her hands. “Ah, come on, I don’t have time for this.” Biting onto one of the waffles, she jumped the other one between her hands, cooling it as she ran out the door.

By the time she was at the office, she finished her waffles and logged into her computer just in time.

“Excuse me,” a brown-haired man approached her holding up a stuffed tiger keychain. “I think this fell off of your bag in the elevator.” He mentally thanked his co-worker for telling him about the keychain beforehand.

“Oh! I didn’t notice. Thank you…” she took the keychain and glanced up at the new employee, trying to remember his name.

“Rick,” he smiled at her.

“Thank you, Rick. This is special to me.”

He waved at her and headed back to sit in his cubicle, silently cheering and pumping his fist at a successful encounter.

Can’t believe I almost lost you. She stroked the tiny tiger’s head. It was the only toy she had left from her real parents. She hooked him onto her purse. “Okay, Ty, let’s get to work.”

Like every other workday, Jennifer focused on getting her work done, not saying or paying attention to anyone else. At lunchtime, she headed to the company cafeteria since she didn’t bring anything from home.

“Hey, Jennifer!” Rick called out to her, waving from his seat at a table with his tray of food.

“Hi,” she gave him a wave. A friendly one, isn’t he?

“You can sit here,” he pointed at the chair next to him.

“I’m actually headed back to my desk. Thank you anyway though,” she walked off while munching on a cheese sandwich.

“Oh…” he sighed and slumped back down into his chair.

“Tough luck, man,” Bill nudged his arm. “Might want to dial it down a bit for someone like her… and so you stop drawing the attention of the entire cafeteria.”

By the time Jennifer got back to her desk, she was done with her sandwich. Her stomach growled as she sat down at her desk.  I should’ve bought more food. She thought about how much work she had left for the day and the book waiting for her at home that she was dying to read. She buckled down, her fingers flying across the keyboard.

Once again, as soon as it hit four o’clock, Jennifer logged off her computer and flew out of the office.

“Jennifer!” Rick called out to her and rushed over to the elevator. The door closed before he got there.

“Give up, man; she’s not interested,” Bill laughed.

“That’s not true; she just hasn’t really noticed me yet. Once she does, and I’m on her radar, I’ll make my move. But for now, I want to invite her to a small get-together,” Rick took off towards the stairs.

He rushed downstairs, huffing and wishing he’d kept up with his cardio recently. He spotted her as she was leaving the building. “Jennifer… Wait up… Damn,” she didn’t hear him, so he continued out of the building, nearly tripping out the front door.

Thump. Thump. Thump. A ball bounced out into the street.

“Jack! Don’t run out into the road!” a woman screamed at her little boy.

Honk, honk. Screech.  The person in the Mack truck slammed on their brakes as soon as they noticed the boy. A woman ran into the street and lunged to knock the boy back out of the way.

Thud. The truck slammed into the woman, sending her flying a few feet.

“Ow,” the boy landed on his butt, his elbow scraping the ground. He started to cry and his mom rushed to pick him up.

Blood pooled on the street, gushing out of the woman’s head. Rick’s eyes widened and his heart sank. He couldn’t believe what had happened right in front of him. “Jennifer? No…” he ran up to her as he pulled his phone out, dialling for emergency services. “Hello, there was an accident in front of Newton Solutions, and a woman is seriously injured. P-please send an ambulance immediately,” his voice stuttered as he tried to remain as calm as possible.

He knelt down beside her as others crowded around nearby to watch. They whispered amongst themselves and took pictures and videos of the scene.

Rick grabbed her hand. “Please hold on, Jennifer.”

“I… I’m so sorry,” the driver of the truck stood a few feet away, holding onto his hat as he shook. “The kid came out of nowhere… and she lunged into the way.”

“She saved my baby,” the mother cried out, tears streaming down her face as she clung to her son.

Rick checked her slowing pulse. “Come on, Jennifer, please hold on.”

Sirens blared as the ambulance drove up to them. The crowd pushed off to the side more to let the paramedics through. “Give us more space,” the male paramedic said before he knelt down to check her injuries while the female paramedic pulled a stretcher out of the back.

Rick stumbled back a couple of steps, his head in a daze, feeling surreal. The sound of the crowd melted away as he watched them move Jennifer and rush her into the back of the ambulance.

“Can I come?” he called out.

“Hurry in the front,” the male paramedic said before closing the door. He had noticed he was the man holding onto her hand and assumed they were close.

“Right.”

Rick sat outside of urgent care, his leg bouncing as he waited for any news. “How did this happen?” Rick growled as he ran his hands roughly through his hair. “Please be okay…”

A doctor approached him. “You were the one that came with Miss Medina, right?”

“Y-yes,” he flew to his feet. “Is she going to make it?”

“She’s stable but in critical condition. It’s too early to say if she’ll make it. She’s currently in a coma, and if she doesn’t wake up within a few days… she may never wake up.”

“Isn’t it possible to wake up years later?”

“Highly unlikely though.”

Rick fell back into the chair.

“I’m sorry I don’t have better news, but—”

“No, I know you did you’re best. Thank you. Can I see her?”

“In a little while; we need to keep a close eye on her right now.”

“Oh… Okay…”

Not having any more time to linger, the doctor moved on.

Rick pulled out his phone to call the office and inform them of the situation. “Hey, Bill, are you still at the office?”

“Yup, along with your stuff.” He had actually been waiting for Rick to get back and fell asleep at Rick’s desk.

“I have bad news about Jennifer…” Rick explained what happened to Jennifer right outside of the office.

“Damn… Explains why there were a ton of sirens going off earlier and the cops have been hanging out by the building for a while.”

Rick glanced at his watch. “Um… Why are you still at the office? Doing overtime?”

“Uh, something like that,” he looked at the empty cubicles around him and wiped the drool off his face.

“Well, whatever… I figured you’d have a better idea of what to do in this situation than me.”

“I’ve never had to deal with a situation like this, but I do know who to talk to, so you can leave it to me.”

“Um… Does she have family or anyone to call? They asked me earlier, but I had no idea.”

Bill groaned as he got up from Rick’s desk. “I’ll see if HR is still around and find out her emergency contacts. Was her phone there?”

“Yes, but it’s locked.”

Bill stayed on the phone until he arrived at HR’s office upstairs. “Looks like they already left…” Click. He pushed the door open. “But I might be able to check anyway. Give me a moment,” he set his cell phone down on the desk and logged into the computer using someone else’s info. “Here it is. Jennifer Medina… There’s nothing listed for emergency contacts.”

“Oh…”

“So, my dear trainee, what are you going to do?”

“I’ll stay here for a while, at least until they let me see her. I’m not sure what I’ll do afterwards.”

“Want me to bring your things to the hospital?”

“You wouldn’t mind?”

“Considering the circumstances, no; it’s the least I can do.”

“Okay then, please do. Thanks, Bill.”

“I’ll see you soon.”

They hung up and Rick sighed as he leant back in his chair, thinking. If he had caught up to her before she left the building, she would’ve been okay, but the boy probably would’ve been hit by the truck instead. “There is no going back, so the ‘what-if’ doesn’t matter…” he mumbled to himself.

“You’re the man that was with the woman outside Newton Solutions, right?” a woman in a long coat, holding the hand of a little boy with bandaged elbows approached him.

“Yeah,” Rick nodded.

“Is she… Is she okay?”

“We don’t know yet.”

She knelt down in front of him, tears in her eyes as she stared at the floor. “If… If you have a chance, can you tell her how thankful I am to her for saving my little boy?” Tears dripped onto the floor. Her son beside her bowed, trying to mimic her.

Rick choked back. He clenched his fists, gripping his pants. “I can do that,” he barely managed the words.

“Thank you so much,” the woman sniffled and pulled a card out from her purse. “Can you also give her this,” she handed him her business card, her personal number on the back. “I’d like to thank her in person… if possible… and hopefully repay her in some way.”

“Okay…” Rick stared at her card. Carry Serane, Event Planner.

She bowed to him again and wiped the tears away before leaving with her son.

“See, Jennifer, you need to pull through so you can meet the boy you saved… and his mother.” He gripped his hands tightly in his lap as he stared at the door to her room.
